Consider the line of flow (ease of movement)

When setting up a sofa, the first thing to consider is the "flow line".

Ensuring proper flow around the sofa will facilitate movement in the living room and create a comfortable gathering place for daily life.

What is a flow line?

A line represents the paths that people travel in their daily lives and work.

Furniture placement must be based on the necessary flow lines for the size of the room.

When considering a sofa, it is important to check the depth of the sofa well in advance, as it may actually be as or more tight than the width of the sofa.

Guideline for flow line

The standard aisle width for people walking around is at least 60 cm. 80 cm or more for the main flow line where there is a lot of traffic and for aisles where there is a lot of movement with luggage. A minimum aisle width should be maintained between furniture, such as in front of sofas and TV boards, to allow for movement and storage space. It is advisable to leave 40 cm of space for side walks and at least 1 m of space in front of closets and other areas where large items are moved in and out.

Considering the flow line of our home

Let us first consider the behavioral patterns of living.

People who relax after eating on the couch as soon as they get home.

WEEKDAYS ARE OFTEN BUSY MOVING AROUND IN THE LDK.

Holidays to enjoy hobbies such as reading or tinkering in the garden.

CHILDREN LOVE TO PLAY TV GAMES.

We check the line of movement of the installation location after envisioning not only the scene of sitting on the sofa, but also the movements before and after sitting on the sofa. In this way, the optimal size of the sofa for your home will naturally become clear, allowing for a more realistic study.

More comfortable living room with flow line + α

The living room is one of the places in a house where people spend a lot of time, relaxing on the sofa or watching TV, and where people move frequently. Along with the line of flow, it is good to be aware of the appropriate distance between the sofa and the TV. Generally speaking, the best viewing distance is "the height of the TV screen x 3 times". Even if the line of flow between the TV, living room table, and sofa is fine, the screen may be too close for comfort, so adjust the distance based on this standard.

THE HEIGHT OF THE TV ALSO PLAYS A ROLE IN THE EASE OF VIEWING. IT IS SAID THAT PEOPLE'S EYES NATURALLY LOOK DOWN A LITTLE MORE THAN HORIZONTALLY. IDEALLY, THE TV SHOULD BE PLACED SO THAT THE CENTER OF THE TV SCREEN IS ABOUT 10 DEGREES BELOW THE EYE LEVEL WHEN SITTING ON THE SOFA. IN THE CASE OF OLED, THE REQUIRED DISTANCE IS SLIGHTLY LESS.

There is a reason why you feel "somehow" small or uncomfortable. We hope you will enjoy a more comfortable time by creating a room with consideration so that you will not feel uncomfortable even though you have bought a sofa that you like.

Relationship between windows and sofas

It can be wall-mounted, centered, or pulled up to a window. The placement of sofas varies greatly depending on how they are used. The most common layout is to place it by a window. A sofa placed in front of a gorgeous double-opening curtain. Just imagining a living room by the sea with soft light shining through the wood blinds onto the sofa is a rich experience.

Here are some points to keep in mind when installing a sofa near a window.

Points to keep in mind when laying out a sofa near a window

01 / Lighting

The amount of light depends on the relationship between the height of the sofa's back and the window, which affects the brightness of the room.

If the hip window and the backrest are the same height or the backrest is low

The amount of lighting is not affected at all. If the room has plenty of space, it is recommended that the layout be kept at a distance from the windows to allow for the opening and closing of windows and curtains.

If the backrest is higher than the hip window

The amount of light will naturally be less. If the window is large and only a small portion of the backrest is high, as shown in the photo, enough light will shine into the room. If the sofa occupies a large portion of the window, the amount of light should be taken into consideration when determining the size of the sofa.

Sweeping windows

Consider whether the backrest and arms will block light but still allow natural light into the room.

02/ Opening and closing windows and curtains

If windows and sofas are too close to each other, it will be difficult to open and close windows and curtains. To ensure smooth opening and closing, please keep the following points in mind.

Provide a space between the sofa and the window (about 20 cm *depending on the thickness of the curtains).
Provide a space between the sofa and the window where people can pass through (about 40 cm)

There is also a way to use low-thickness types such as Roman shades, roll screens, and vertical blinds that can be raised and lowered instead of rail-type curtains.

03/ Ease of entry and exit

When going out onto a balcony, layout the sofa 45 cm to 60 cm away from the edge of the window to make it easier to get in and out. If the room is large enough, you may leave plenty of space between the window and the sofa for a person to pass through.

04/ Sunlight damage

THE WINDOW SIDE IS EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUNLIGHT, WHICH CAN DRY OUT NATURAL LEATHER, CAUSING IT TO CRACK AND FADE. EFFECTIVE COUNTERMEASURES INCLUDE INSTALLING LACES WITH UV-CUT FUNCTIONS AND USING UV-CUT FILM GLASS.

To avoid damaging your sofa, be aware of your surroundings when placing it near a window. It may seem like a small thing, but by being conscious of the layout, you will be much more satisfied with your sofa.

Window layout for reference

Located in the most visible part of the house, windows are an important element that influences the image of the interior.

Depending on the placement, it becomes much more stylish.

Please refer to the following examples of sofas placed by the window.

Sofa style in the study with one-arm couches in place

The sofa [TB] one-arm couch was chosen. The stylish impression of the vertical blinds and the straight lines of the sofa are in harmony, creating a neat and tidy look.

Stylish sofa [GF] is installed parallel to the window. The range of lighting from the window is moderate, and the sofa design is clean, giving a light and fresh impression. The shadows cast on the sofa by changing the angle of the blind's wings are also wonderful.

Living room sofa style to savor the view

SOFA [GRVA] is placed facing the window. The garden can be seen from the large window. Sitting or lying down on the sofa, you will feel as if you are completely immersed in nature. The sofa is at a height that does not obstruct the view, so even if you sit at the dining table in front of it, you can still see the garden.

Sofa style that plays a leading role in the living room

The sofa [TRES-A] couch is placed in the center of the room. The black fabric accents the entire room. The arm side of the sofa is not attached exactly to the window, but has enough space for a person to pass through. The extra space creates a relaxing atmosphere.

Placement of couch parallel to window

A sofa [GRVA] couch is placed parallel to the window and used as a room divider. In a room where the living room and dining room are combined, you can use the sofa as a partition to divide the room into zones while making the room more spacious.

Royal style with sofa matching the width of the window

The sofa [EF], with its softly curved arms and elegant impression, is placed in the center against the window. The width of the window and the sofa are well balanced, and the sofa fits in perfectly with the room. The white-based sofa is perfect for the bright atmosphere of the light pouring in.

The placement of a sofa depends on the way you spend your time, such as looking out the window or reading a book at hand. Also, you can enjoy a more thoughtful sofa style by choosing a sofa for the entire room, including the color of the fixtures and flooring, the type and size of the windows, and the design of the window treatments. We hope you will enjoy redecorating your home by choosing a sofa as a starting point.

Small living room layout

The size of a sofa in a store or on a Web site may differ from the impression it gives when it is actually carried into a room. We will show you how to choose a sofa that is less likely to cause problems with the appearance of oppression and the flow of traffic.

1) Corner sofa to make the most of a corner of a room

Placing a "corner sofa" in a small living room can make a space that tends to become dead space a cozy place. The layout is based on the corner, so the room and the view can be kept wide. Another advantage is that you can have a conversation facing each other in a small space.

Compact sofa, a staple of small living rooms

SOFA [TB] (Japanese only)
Conversion of sofa [TB] 2P with a width of 1940mm and a seat width of 1640mm to one arm.
The arm width allows for a wider flow line.

There are a variety of sizes available, but if you choose a design that is about 1600 mm wide and has narrower legs, you will not feel oppressed. You can also change the arms from both sides to only one side for a wider seating area.

Think in terms of how you spend your time on the sofa and what you use it for.

AS THE TYPES OF ENTERTAINMENT AND FAMILY STYLES DIVERSIFY, SO DO THE WAYS IN WHICH PEOPLE SPEND TIME ON SOFAS. IN ADDITION TO TRADITIONAL WAYS OF SPENDING TIME TOGETHER, SUCH AS WATCHING TV WITH THE FAMILY OR LYING DOWN, THE CHOICES ALSO VARY DEPENDING ON WHAT YOU DO ON THE SOFA, SUCH AS WORKING, USING YOUR SMARTPHONE OR PC, OR SPENDING TIME WITH YOUR CHILDREN. LET'S IMAGINE YOURSELF AND YOUR FAMILY RELAXING ON A SOFA.

If you are a family, Dad can read on his favorite single-seat sofa. Mom stretches her tired legs out on the ottoman for a massage. Kids can stretch out on the couch. Try to create a place for everyone in one space. Enjoy your relaxation time by choosing a sofa that will bring you as close as possible to the image you have in your mind.

Enjoy home time with your children

Until the early elementary school years, they ran by the table or jumped and bounced on the sofa. They are always in danger. To make family time safer, we recommend lowering the height of the sofa. By changing the legs of the TORES, the height of the entire sofa can be lowered so that it is closer to the floor. For example, you can install low legs when the child is small and change to high legs when the child grows up.

Relaxation time is shared by all

Even in your room, you want to stretch your legs and relax like a sofa in a resort hotel or a daybed by the pool. The couch sofa has been synonymous with luxury since the late 18th century. It is a style that is admired by many. With a straight sofa, one person may fall asleep and there is no room for the other person who wants to sit on the sofa.

We each want to spend our time as we see fit.

More and more families are living in a shared living room space and doing whatever they want to do. In this case, instead of sitting side by side on the sofa, it is more comfortable to divide the space a little to make it more comfortable for both parties. If your lifestyle changes, consider adding a one-seat sofa or easy chair.

I want to spark conversation with my family and visitors.

IF YOU WANT TO MAKE COMMUNICATION EASIER, WE RECOMMEND THE L-SHAPE (COUCH/CORNER SOFA), WHICH CREATES A 90-DEGREE ANGLE BETWEEN YOU AND YOUR PARTNER. THIS ANGLE IS CALLED THE 90-DEGREE METHOD AND IS SAID TO BE IDEAL FOR RELAXED DISCUSSIONS WHERE BOTH PARTIES CAN BE OPEN AND COMFORTABLE WITH EACH OTHER. UNLIKE FACE-TO-FACE MEETINGS, THERE IS NO NEED FOR CONSTANT EYE CONTACT, WHICH EASES TENSION. BOTH PARTIES CAN TALK AT A MODERATE DISTANCE WHILE DOING WHAT THEY LIKE.

I want to use the sofa widely.

When a sofa is placed in a limited space, a combination of armless sofas can be an effective solution. The absence of arms creates a connection with other spaces. In addition, if the back cushions can be moved freely, the cushions can be moved to create greater depth, allowing the sofa to be used as an extension of the floor for lounging, sitting cross-legged, and so on.

In the past, the role of the living room was "a place to relax after a meal, centered around the TV," but with the addition of smartphones, tablets, and various other tools, the variety of entertainment has increased. However, with the addition of smartphones, tablets, and other tools, the variety of entertainment options has increased. When choosing a sofa, it is important to imagine whether it suits the way you like to spend your time. This will vary depending on the sofa's design, materials, and structure, such as comfort.
